Orthodontists, product managers, and

Overall impressions of industry media professionals

Host: Wei Qinghua, CEO of Jizhou Education

Let me first explain my understanding of this matter. "Digitalization" is short for "digitalization plus intelligence." Everyone knows that invisible orthodontics is digitalized, and now fixed orthodontics can also be digitalized. So,What new avenues can the dental profession explore in 2022? Let's discuss this topic today.Next, we'll have a few teachers share their insights.

Teacher Li Jiazhi

As a clinician, I have been working on the front lines of clinical practice since graduating from university; in recent years, I have had the opportunity to participate in standardized orthodontic training for clinicians. These two aspects have given me much to reflect on regarding my work in orthodontics:

First, I feel that the bonding of orthodontic brackets is very important. For clinicians, inaccurate positioning can affect the treatment course and outcome.

Secondly, in addition to good materials and tools, orthodontics also involves the doctor's technical skills and the patient's cooperation. These aspects cannot be solved overnight, but if the materials and tools can be improved, reducing variables in the doctor's use, then the doctor will avoid many pitfalls during the treatment process.

In addition, around 2008, I began to focus on traditional indirect bonding (indirect bonding in fixed orthodontics). At that time, I read domestic and international literature, drew lines and marked points on the model, placed the locking bracket at the marked points on the model, and then transferred it into the patient's mouth through a double-layered soft and hard membrane for indirect bonding. Unfortunately, there was a 1/3 failure rate. After a period of research, I felt that this approach was too difficult, so I temporarily put it aside. However, this process gave me a good experience: indirect bonding allows for very clear visualization of the tooth position and orientation from outside the mouth, combined with X-rays to see the angle of the tooth root, resulting in very accurate positioning of the locking bracket. Domestic and international literature also reached positive conclusions. This laid the groundwork for the later development of Austem.

With the advent of the digital age, and the successful application of digital technology in invisible orthodontics, the era of fixed digital orthodontics has arrived.

So, when Mr. Kang discussed with us the possibility of digitalization entering the field of fixed orthodontics, I said...We hope to start with indirect bonding to develop digital fixed orthodontics; then, we will implement lock angle compensation to achieve accurate control of teeth in three-dimensional space; finally, we will develop locks with our own brand to control costs and make digital fixed orthodontic appliances affordable for Chinese doctors and ordinary people.

Teacher Liu Jin

I've been in the profession for 39 years, entering the field of fixed orthodontics in 1989. In our time, it was said that the essential path to becoming a skilled orthodontist was through practice, dexterity, and ultimately, a seamless integration of mind and body. We've followed this path for many years, but unexpectedly, the emergence of sophisticated digital invisible orthodontics has allowed us to achieve results comparable to those achieved by orthodontists with years of experience through remote control. This has been a significant shock to us.

Personally, although I'm retired, I still have two to three hundred patients each year who value my experience and require my personal attention. I enjoy it; I feel it's a responsibility to my patients. However, as I get older, an orthodontist's physical strength inevitably declines.

Later, in the process of practicing digital invisible orthodontics, I found that I could separate my hands from my brain. I didn't need to use my hands, but could control the pathology from the background with my brain. This was a process that I enjoyed more, and patients also appreciated it.

At the end of last year, after repeated collaboration and adjustments with BeconMed on digital fixed orthodontics, we faced the reality of the arrival of the digital era together, and we believe that 2022 is the inaugural year of digital orthodontics. With the arrival of this inaugural year, we have achieved fully digital orthodontic services, including digital fixed orthodontics, digital retainers, and restorations. In the future, through digital analysis, we can provide better services to more patients and doctors online.

Fortunately, I didn't fall behind during the entire (technological) transformation process and kept up with the digital age. From the past experience-based medicine, from a (dental) craftsman to the future of digital medicine, I think I can still go a long way with this era. Thank you.

Host: Wei Qinghua, CEO of Jizhou Education

I feel that for orthodontic specialists, BeconMed's products need to be both precise and allow for the transmission of knowledge and skills. Did Mr. Kang consider this aspect when designing the products? Let's ask Mr. Kang to elaborate.

Kang Xuan, Founder and CEO of Beikangmei Digital Dental

A good product manager, from designing restorative products to orthodontic products, must understand the clinical needs of the end-users. Initially, Professor Li Jiazhi helped me plan with eight words:Precise positioning, foolproof bonding.

After defining these eight words, we found that the demand for fixed orthodontics is very large, but the number of orthodontic specialists is currently limited. I wondered if there was a technology that could effectively address this demand and empower these doctors with their treatment experience and wisdom through a system.

Let's return to digitalization. What exactly is digitalization? Many people understand it broadly as a single concept, but I prefer to do underlying logic analysis like Steve Jobs. I understand digitalization as having three parts, the first part being...Information (Information Technology)The second part is calledDigital refers to true three-dimensional images. And the last part, which is currently very popular in various industries, as everyone probably knows, is Facebook (now renamed Meta).Intelligence, or the metaverseThese are actually concepts. In real healthcare, these three—informatization, digitalization, and future intelligentization—can continuously develop and iterate along this line.

In the future, our hearts and the hearts of doctors will be intertwined, because our shared goal is to provide the best for patients. Therefore...I also believe that with continuous product iteration, there will be many possibilities in the future.Because we have already laid the foundation for the material architecture, IT architecture, software architecture, and medical architecture.

As the co-founder of an industry media company, Damai is an observer. What are your views and opinions on this technology?

Damai, co-founder of "Good Teeth"

I just checked my phone, and our live event was being broadcast live across the country via the internet and other information technology.

Previously, I also asked my colleagues to search the entire internet for information about "digitalization + oral health" in February, which is the last 28 days. We found 19,612 related results nationwide, indicating that the topic was very popular.

Before the meeting, I spoke with the organizers, who told me there were over 160 events this year. As everyone knows, the events have been affected by the pandemic. However, when I visited the venue this morning, I found that all academic exchange activities were proceeding as normal. Why were they able to proceed normally? Because now communication and learning are being conducted online and through information technology. This would have been nearly impossible in the past, but it's now very well-established.

Information technology is already widespread, and digitalization or intelligentization is actually being nurtured in this already fertile ground. That's why I've noticed that in the past two years, almost 70% of activities related to the dental industry have revolved around digitalization. It's also a hot topic throughout the dental industry. Why? Because it's a trend. Why is this concept so readily accepted? If digitalization can't solve specific problems or doesn't offer concrete solutions, no user will choose it.

From the perspective of overall human societal innovation, a technology or concept only gains increasing attention and acceptance when it can replace or optimize the core functions of existing products or solve key problems. I believe digitalization is an evolution of tools; its underlying logic is still about reducing the overall operating costs of society.

However, I also had a question: as an ordinary user, this is a completely new product for me, how can I accept it? Mr. Kang's team gave me a very good answer. Beikangmei has put a lot of effort into the user experience, improving it through innovative materials and digital molding, which shows a very comprehensive approach.

Overall, as an industry media outlet, we prefer to look at things from multiple dimensions. These include perspectives such as cost, economics, users, solutions, digitalization, and trends, as mentioned earlier. We hope this provides some helpful suggestions.

Patients and doctors

Acceptance of digital fixed orthodontics

Host: Wei Qinghua, CEO of Jizhou Education

Thank you very much, Damai. I'm particularly interested in the user perspective Damai mentioned. I'm especially curious about Professor Li Jiazhi and Professor Liu Jin.When using digital technology in clinical practice, how well do patients accept it, including how well do you accept it yourselves?

Teacher Liu Jin

I feel that although I am quite old, I am very keen on keeping up with the latest trends. This is the era of digitalization. Whether you like it or not, it's already here. If you don't follow it, you'll be left behind. If our generation clings to the classics, you'll die with them—that's inevitable.

When we show the patients the bonding process and the results of the treatment, almost all of them are completely convinced, which proves that we have chosen the right path.

Teacher Li Jiazhi

The most important factor is whether the doctor is willing to accept new things; that is the most crucial element.

Having worked as an orthodontist for decades, I feel that modern digital fixed orthodontics has reached a very high level. It involves precise data design for the angle of each tooth root, then placing the wires, and the final result is exactly what we want. This is the effect of digital personalized manufacturing.

Kang Xuan, Founder and CEO of Beikangmei Digital Dental

Because we had clinical experts involved from the very beginning, we are quite persistent about the clinical results.

We conducted a three-year case follow-up study on 40 groups of patients, and the results showed that each case (with the same type of case and the same doctor group) could shorten the time by an average of 4-6 months. We have clinical validation reports to support this.

The biggest obstacle we encountered at the time was the cost. Although the Chinese market has the greatest potential in the world, it is also the most difficult to penetrate. This is because there are too many regional variables, including the varying levels of expertise and philosophies among doctors, and the competition is extremely fierce.

In addition, while digitalization has its unique characteristics, it actually faces competition from the entire user and consumer market, and ultimately, consumers have to pay the price. Therefore, we judged that if we wanted to truly succeed in this endeavor, we needed to create a professional medical brand for mass consumption. In the end, we established a "three-high" principle: high quality, high aesthetics, and high cost-effectiveness.

Every "high" requirement involves incredibly difficult aspects. High quality encompasses the medical, materials, and software aspects; high aesthetics refers to the aesthetic economy, as well as the user's psychological and consumer experience and research. For example, how did we reduce the pasting time to 12 minutes? Now, using temperature-sensitive materials for positioning and pasting, we compared the data collected by oral scanning with the proposed solution, and the error was an astonishing 0.05, a tenfold reduction compared to manual operation. This is the power of technology, the power of multidisciplinary collaboration.

I believe that more and more doctors will join our team in the future, and I hope that we can co-create and share these new directions and needs together: technology brings us true value and beauty.

03

Applications of digital fixed orthodontics

What stage are we at?

Host: Wei Qinghua, CEO of Jizhou Education

So, what stage do teachers think the application of digital fixed orthodontics has reached now?

Teacher Li Jiazhi

While fixed braces have a history of over 100 years, digital fixed braces have actually been around for many years in some foreign countries, but in China, they are just beginning. For me, although digital fixed braces are just starting in China, they are definitely a promising path.

Teacher Liu Jin

In fact, the necessary supporting technologies are already in place, such as CBCT, intraoral scanning technology, and backend software. Today, with precise positioning, we are continuously optimizing our approach. Although there is a significant difference in the skill levels of dentists in China, scientific and precise guidance can help many people turn the impossible into possible – something only the digital age can achieve.

Damai, co-founder of "Good Teeth"

I'll answer Mr. Wei's question from a different perspective. Perhaps many of you haven't realized that what the two professors and Mr. Kang just mentioned is the fundamental science of the medical field, while software and algorithms are the fundamental science of the industrial field. If you're interested, you can look into the industrial sector. How much software and how many algorithms are independently developed in China? Actually, a lot relies on foreign fundamental logic. This aspect of soft power is less obvious. But you must understand that if the algorithms and technology belong to others, when and how they are used, and how they can be used, will still be a constraint.

Like Mr. Wei, I am a digital enthusiast who enjoys researching the direction of industrial development. Therefore, when we choose to work on basic science and fundamental algorithms, this choice itself is extremely difficult. The reason why basic science is fundamental is that it explores how to break through the bottlenecks that are holding us back, so as to better help this industry or doctors.

Choosing the right path is only the first step; afterwards, one must be grounded and patient. It requires uniting more interdisciplinary and cross-field talents to research and refine the fundamentals, and ultimately apply those fundamentals to practice.

Slow is fast, less is more.

Host: Wei Qinghua, CEO of Jizhou Education

Let me elaborate on this point a little:It's actually like a chip; it has underlying mechanisms. If we don't make breakthroughs, we'll definitely face bottlenecks in the future.

Kang Xuan, Founder and CEO of Beikangmei Digital Dental

Yes,Technological innovation has no end and there are no shortcuts. We are willing to dedicate the rest of our lives to enabling more Chinese people to enjoy better oral treatment.
